Welcome to the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging and Department of Geriatrics, located on the campus of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging and Department of Geriatrics was made possible through a $28.8 million gift from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The Institute and Department at UAMS recognizes the challenge of a 21st Century society that is seeking to accommodate an ever-increasing number of older Americans. People in the United States are living longer than ever before, with the average American expected to live approximately 80 years. Arkansas already ranks fourth in the percentage of persons over the age of 65. In fact, many communities in the state already mimic the way the United States will be in 2020. At that time, there will be as many retired people as there are children!

As the American population continues to live longer, the focus of health care must shift from merely keeping people alive longer to making those later years healthier and more productive. In other words, the focus is not adding years to life; rather, it’s adding life to years.

Our mission is "to deliver quality health care to older persons, conduct research on aging and age-related diseases, provide educational programs on aging for health care professionals and the public, and to influence public policy on aging issues."

Reynolds Institute on Aging at NightThe programs of the Reynolds Institute on Aging and Department of Geriatrics are located in a magnificent structure that includes basic and clinical research, educational programs, a primary care clinic, rehabilitation services and administration under one roof, the facility nurtures a rich environment on which to develop a synergy between the programs. For the first time, basic and clinical researchers can engage in collaborative activities that further the science of aging. In the clinical arena, scientists and health care providers appreciate the opportunity of increased dialogue. This synergy is expected to continue and become even stronger.

In its quest to deliver world-class clinical care, research, and educational programs, the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging employs the following strategies and partnerships:
